What Are Varicose Veins?
Varicose Veins are usually found in the legs and are protruding, bluish vein cords that run just beneath the skin's surface. Eventually they may typically become swollen, twisted, and disfiguring, however they are typically harmless.

If the varicose veins become inflamed they can be painful to the touch and sometimes can effect the circulation which may cause swollen itchy legs with pain and burning around the affected areas. The venous system is made of up a network of veins which include the shallow superficial veins, located close to the surface of the skin, the deep veins, which are the larger veins located deep in the leg closer to the bones, and perforator veins, which connect the superficial veins to the deep veins.

Varicose veins are a common condition and can be a family trait. Women are more likely to get them over men and in the US approximately 23% of all American have them.

What Causes Varicose Veins?
Healthy leg veins contain valves that open and close to assist the return of blood back to the heart. Venous reflux disease develops when the valves become damaged or diseased. As a result, vein valves will not close properly, leading to pooling of the blood in the veins and causing the veins to varicose, the result of which is varicosities, swollen limbs, skin changes, leg heaviness and even ulcers.

Genetics, age, obesity, heavy lifting, a previous leg injury, and pregnancy are all causes of varicose veins. Contrary to popular belief, sitting cross legged will not cause varicose veins, however, it may aggravate an existing condition.

How Do We Treat Varicose Veins?
At Premier Surgical Associates in Palm SPrings, La Quinta & Hemet CA, we now use duplex ultrasound to look at the circulatory system of the leg. This process allows us to get a sharp, two-dimensional picture of the affected area which allows us to better determine the condition of the exact vein and therefore to determine which treatment is best

Our professionals perform varicose vein treatment on a patient

In the old days, flexible metal rods were inserted into the vein from the groin area and passed through the vein, and the vein was physically stripped. This was painful and required surgery.

Today, a thin catheter is inserted into the affected vein under ultrasound guidance which passes though the inside of the vein. It is heated by radio waves or laser, which shrink the tough collagen in the vein wall which causes it to collapse and re-absorb. We use a combination of anesthetic medication mixed with fluid to make the procedure painless. This procedure greatly reduces the risk of scarring although bruising may still occur.

Another method of removing the varicose vein is to use lasers to send bursts of concentrated light into the vein which causes it to collapse. With this treatment when the laser hits the skin, there is a small amount of discomfort but the doctor can easily cool that area off to relieve this.

In addition to the above methods of removing varicose veins, there are other less intrusive methods such as foam sclerotherapy. It is important to first define the extent of the varicose veins and symptoms, and then determine how to best treat them with the least discomfort and best results.
